It’s amazing the number of people we hear (outside of work) mention they are working with a career coach. Obviously we think that is a great idea, but there have been articles posted in the Harvard Business Journal, Forbes and other nationally recognized publications that have recently posted articles about the benefits of working with a coach.
There are numerous benefits for individuals at all stages of your career. Here are some key ways coaches can help you navigate your career with success!
- Clarity and Direction:
- Career coaches help you gain clarity about your career goals, values, and strengths.
- Coaches assist in identifying potential career paths and developing a strategic plan to achieve those goals.
- In our opinion, the other important ingredient is to take action on that clarity and strategy. It can’t just be a nice vision board but an actionable plan!
- Job Search Assistance:
- Coaches provide guidance on effective job search strategies, including resume and cover letter writing, networking, and interview preparation.
- They can help individuals navigate the complexities of the job market and increase your chances of landing desired positions, especially in today’s job market.
- They can also help you stay accountable, it’s exhausting doing a job search (we know, we have been there) so having someone by your side to celebrate, push and support you has real benefits.
- Career Transitions:
- For those considering a career change, coaches offer support in identifying transferable skills and exploring new opportunities.
- They help you manage the challenges and uncertainties associated with career transitions.
- Hopefully they are not just a coach, but someone who has navigated the corporate world (or non-profit or education or….your space) as they can bring a perspective of different industries or roles to consider so you can consider more than just what you have already been exposed to.
- Skill Development:
- Career coaches can help you identify areas for skill development and create plans to enhance your professional capabilities.
- This may include improving communication skills, leadership abilities, or other relevant competencies.
- Coaches can take those areas and help provide ways to implement changes, grow your skills and expand your knowledge to implement immediately at work.
- Confidence Building:
- Coaches provide encouragement and support, helping you build confidence in your abilities and overcome self-doubt.
- This can be particularly valuable during challenging job searches or career transitions.
- Some people call their coaches their work therapists. Coaches are not literally trained therapists per se, but the feeling can be the same. Someone who is just in your corner with no other motive than to help you.
- Accountability and Motivation:
- Career coaches hold you accountable for your goals and provide ongoing motivation to stay on track.
- They offer a supportive partnership that helps you maintain momentum and achieve your desired outcomes.
- Coaches are on the rollercoaster with you!
Each engagement should be customized to the client. Your experience with your coach, though rooted in a framework or process or experience, will be different than someone else’s because your career is different than someone else’s. A career coach acts as a guide, mentor, advisor, and advocate, helping you navigate the complexities of your professional journey and shine your brightest at work.
