So often people think they need to leave their company to find a new challenge or take a step forward in their career. The Shine at Work team partners with people at these pivotal career moments to help them identify what development opportunities are available at their current company first.
There are benefits to growing at your current company while it makes sense. You already know the ins and outs of the product or service your company offers. You know the people, how they work (the quirks and the strengths) and how to navigate the organization to get stuff done. And maybe most importantly, they know and trust you, you have credibility with the team and that goes a long way. Building all of that as a new hire takes time!
So before you decide to jump, let’s see how you can find ways to grow at your current company!
- Talk to Your Manager: Have an open and honest conversation with your manager about your career aspirations. A good manager wants to help you grow, even if it means changing teams or departments. They would much rather retain you than see you leave. So leverage them. Ask for advice on the skills and experiences you need to develop to advance in your role or what other roles require.
- Leverage Company Resources: Do you know all the development tools available for you? If not, as your HR Partner! They can help you identify training programs, mentorship opportunities, internal job postings and even budgets available to support external resources (like conferences or coaches!). They can also work with you and your manager to identify new projects or the chance take on additional responsibilities to demonstrate your skills and potential.
- Learn from Others:. You have a wealth of knowledge in your company, so use it! Connect with people from different departments to gain insights into various career paths. Find a mentor who can offer guidance and support as you navigate your career. Ask people what are some good podcasts, books, conferences, or other resources to help you stay updated on industry trends or learn about a new area of the business.
Remember, career development and growth isn’t just about promotions. Finding ways to stay curious, learn, take on new challenges and say yes to opportunities is a great way to explore the right career path for you. Take the time to create a personal development plan outlining your short-term and long-term goals and then work with trusted partners to turn that into an action plan!
